Obituary for Norma Smeal (Jarrett)

Norma Louise (Jarrett) Smeal, 85, of West Decatur, passed away Thursday, October 28, 2021 at her residence. Born September 20, 1936 at Sanborn, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Harrison and Annie Mae (Goss) Jarrett. Norma was a graduate of the former Osceola Mills High School and had worked at the former McTague Manufacturing Co., Philipsburg, the former DeNol Bookbinding Co., Osceola Mills, and the former General Cigar Co., Philipsburg. After the closing of the General Cigar Co. she worked at the Physical Plant at Penn State University until she retired. Norma was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in West Decatur, where she was a member of The Present Helpers Class and The Missionary Ladies, supporting people in need. She sewed clothing for church plays and made stockings for those in need at Christmas time. On October 5, 1957 in West Decatur, she married George Richard “Dick” Smeal, who preceded her in death on December 8, 2007. Norma is survived by a sister Carlene Elsie Showers of Philipsburg; her caregiver and niece Ann Lovich; and several nieces, nephews and extended family. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters Myrtle Jane Jarrett, Bertha Larue Jarrett and Mona Leona Harris and three brothers Walter Lemoin Jarrett, Marvin Lee Jarrett and Darwin Thomas Jarrett. A Funeral service will be held at the Dahlgren-Spewock Funeral Home, Inc., 228 N. Centre St. Philipsburg, on Monday, November 1 at 12:00pm with Lay-Speaker Georgia Litz officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Monday from 11am to 12pm. Norma will be laid to rest next to her husband Dick at Mock’s Hill Cemetery in West Decatur.
