Obituary for Mildred Kosut (Reiter)

Mildred Ruth Kosut of Philipsburg, passed away at sunrise on Thursday, October 13, 2022 at the Mount Nittany Medical Center. She was 97. Mildred was born at home in Chester Hill (Philipsburg) on July 19, 1925, the daughter of the late James E. Reiter Sr. and Geneva (Jean) Price. She married Martin “Skip” Kosut on October 5, 1943 in Winchester, Virginia. He preceded her in death on April 21, 1997 after 53 years of marriage. Mildred was a graduate of the Philipsburg High School in 1943. Over time she would also be called by nicknames Mil or Mid. Mil and Skip put down roots in Chester Hill making the house 3 doors down from Mil’s birthplace the home for their family of 4. It now included son Jim and daughter Cathie.
She was active in the Chester Hill Mother’s Club. She served as the chairwoman for the door-to-door community campaigns for the March of Dimes (polio campaign), Easter Seals and Heart Association.
After Jim and Cathie were well on their way with their future endeavors, Mil served on the Chester Hill Borough Council becoming the second woman to be elected to the council. There she chaired the organization’s 1st annual Halloween event for the children of the borough. She could also be seen for years on the Board of Elections for Chester Hill Borough where she served as an inspector. In 2020, Mildred was the voter who had been registered the longest in Chester Hill Borough. Coming from German Lutheran ancestors she was brought up in the Lutheran Church. She was the oldest Life Member at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Philipsburg. Over the years she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, was also a member of church women (Willing Workers and Lutheran Church Women) where she held office from time to time. She was the organizer for the first Monthly Soup Sale and could be seen in the church kitchen for many events and served on the Church Council. When others were retiring, Mid owned and operated “MID’S CANDIES”, a dream she had since childhood. Mil could always count on having a good day when she would get out and “PLAY in the DIRT” by taking loving care of the peonies (now over 100 years old) given to her by her grandmother. She enjoyed shopping outlets, genealogy, reading Civil War History and recipe books. The finishing touch to a day out and about was a hot fudge sundae “chocolate ice cream please with extra hot fudge, Thank You.” In addition to her parents and her husband Skip, she is preceded in death by a son Jim on April 18, 2022, brother James E. Reiter, Jr., and sister in laws June (Roach) Reiter and Daisy (Zimmerman) Reiter. Survivors include daughter Cathie Kosut, granddaughter Candace Vollmer, great grandchildren Kiley, Justin, Trevor, Ryann, Rylie and Leila, brother Edward P. Reiter and sister-in-law Naomi Reiter. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Mildred started a new beginning when she was called to heaven at Sunrise. I’m sure she was singing her favorite hymn “When Morning Gilds the Skies” the whole way.

WHEN MORNING GILDS THE SKIES
When morning gilds the sky
My heart awakening cries
May Jesus Christ be praised

When evening shadows fall
This rings my curfew call
May Jesus Christ be praised

Sing sun and stars of space
Sing ye that see his face
Sing Jesus Christ be praised

Gods’ whole creation o’er
Both now and evermore
Shall Jesus Christ be praised
Old German Lutheran Hymn

Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at the Philipsburg Cemetery.
