Obituary for Larry Joe Johnson

Larry Joe Johnson, 71, of Philipsburg, passed away on Monday, September 5, 2022 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Born on May 19, 1951 in Philipsburg, he was a son of the late George A. “Yiddy” and Jean L. (Straitor) Johnson. Larry Joe was a 1969 graduate of Philipsburg Osceola High School and attended Williamsport Community College. He was a veteran of the US Navy and served during Vietnam. Larry Joe was a member of the band, The Sensations, was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Philipsburg BPO Elks #1173, was a life member of the Alexandria American Legion Post #0520, was a member of Hope Fire Company and was an EMT. He was of the Presbyterian faith and was an avid reader, liked to golf, travel and train dogs. He enjoyed hunting, riding his motorcycle and spending time with Diane and his family. Larry Joe had worked as a Health Physicist until his retirement. He was also a high school football and wrestling referee and a Constable for Philipsburg. On April 1, 1999, he married the former Diane Dunsmore, who survives at home. Also surviving are children Christopher L. Johnson, of Tyrone, Sonja L. Dimoff and her husband John of Shippensburg, Ericka D. Shaw and husband Bryan of Nanty Glo, Jeffrey C. Fowler II of Philipsburg and Jennelle E. Jira and husband Tim of Philipsburg; six grandchildren Makenzie C. Reed and husband Anthony, Gregory S. Leturgey, Braydan T. Shaw, Sophia K. Shaw, Tobyn L. Jira and Calvin R. Jira; two great grandchildren Lillian and Maizie; a sister Georgiana Johnson and husband Dante Colna of Bellefonte and a niece Amy Plummer and husband Marvin of Felton, CA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter Skylar Sarah Shaw. Friends will be received at the Dahlgren-Spewock Funeral Home, Inc., 228 N. Centre St. Philipsburg, on Thursday, September 15th from 6pm to 8pm. An Elks memorial service will begin at 8pm followed by military honors.
