Obituary for James Burge

James Winfield Burge, 93, of Morrisdale, passed away Friday, September 13, 2019 at Ridgeview Eldercare & Rehabilitation Center, Curwensville. Born August 25, 1926 in Morrisdale, he was a son of the late John & Rachel (Price) Burge. Jim was a 1948 graduate of Morris-Cooper Township High School and was a heavy equipment mechanic for IBEW Local #126. After retirement he was a school bus driver for the Morrisdale area. A veteran of the US Navy, he served during WWII. Jim was affiliated with the Church of Christ, Morrisdale. He was a member of IBEW Local #126 for more than 50 years and was a member of the National Rifle Association. Jim was a Penn State fan, enjoyed hunting and going to hunting camp, watching war and western movies, gunsmithing, modifying things (computers and electricity), industrial arts, and going to Bailey’s garage to help unload coal and mechanic work. On July 5, 1946 in Cumberland, MD, he married Edna M. (Albert) Burge, who passed away January 31, 2019. Jim is survived by two daughters Mary Rachelle “Shelly” Broderick and husband Thomas J. of Niagara Falls, NY and Patricia Ann McKnight and husband Curtis F. of Morrisdale; son in law Donald J. Chaput of Boonville, NY; six grandchildren Dr. Matthew D. McKnight and wife Dr. Dianalee of Highland, MD, Daniel J. Broderick and wife Beth of LeRaysville, Donald J. Chaput of Phoenix, AZ, Bethany R. Tesche and husband James of Palmyra, Luke J. Broderick and wife Christina of Newfane, NY and Jonathan S. McKnight of Morrisdale; five great grandchildren Clara McKnight of Highland, MD, Julian McKnight of Highland, MD, Olivia Broderick of Newfane, NY, Lilly Broderick of Newfane, NY and Neal Broderick of LeRaysville; and many nieces & nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Jim was preceded in death by a daughter Linda Lee Chaput, twin grandsons James Wayne and Gerald Wayne McKnight; two brothers Norman Burge and Calvin “Kelly” Burge, and five sisters Mary Acton, Helen Waring, Geraldine Pellow and twins Madeline Hassinger and Mildred Moriarity Witters. Friends will be received at the Dahlgren-Spewock Funeral Home, Inc., 228 N. Centre St. Philipsburg, PA on Saturday, September 21 from 6 to 8pm. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home of Sunday, September 22 at 10am with his son in law, Pastor Thomas J. Broderick, officiating. Jim will be laid to rest at the Summit Hill Cemetery, Morrisdale.
