Obituary for David Holmes

David George Holmes, 73, of Philipsburg, passed away quietly on Sunday, July 10, 2022 from complications of a stroke he suffered in July 2020. David was born in Tyrone on February 3, 1949, to Amos and Grace (Naylor) Holmes, both of whom predeceased him. He graduated from Tyrone High School in 1967. He was married to Marilyn R. (Jones) Holmes on April 1, 1995, by his brother Rev. Mark Holmes. Dave served the people of Pennsylvania for 34 years as a State Trooper and then a Sergeant in the Pennsylvania State Police, retiring in 2005. Dave had a passion for fly fishing and spent much of his retirement pursuing that passion working at and tying flies for Fly Fisher's Paradise in State College and teaching kids the art of fly tying. He served as a fly-fishing volunteer advisor at the Philipsburg-Osceola Area School District for three years. Dave was an active and dedicated member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, Philipsburg Lodge 1173. Through his years with the Elks, Dave served the Order in many roles, including every officer position. Dave served as the Exalted Ruler of the Philipsburg Elks twice. Dave was also a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Philipsburg, where he took on many volunteer roles and sang with the church choir. Dave is survived by his wife Marilyn, his daughter Lori Holmes and her spouse Dawn Aubrey of Melrose, New York, his step-son Jonathan Rose and his wife Stephanie of Williston, Vermont, his granddaughter Holly Rose, and his three brothers Jim Holmes and his wife Sue, Scott Holmes and his wife Jackie and Mark Holmes and his wife Jennie. A funeral service will be held at the Dahlgren-Spewock Funeral Home, Inc., 228 N. Centre St. Philipsburg, on Monday, July 18 at 11am. with his brother, Rev. Mark Holmes, officiating. He will be laid to rest at the Philipsburg Cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Sunday, July 17 from 6 until 8pm, with an Elks memorial service beginning at 7:30pm.
